Apple had a feature called "Capture outside Frame" several years ago. This was basically the same thing that Google now advertises for zoom levels like 2.5x or 3x. I tested Apple's Capture outside the frame feature in a store a few years ago and it worked quite decent as far as I remember. Definitely not as bad as in these Golden Gate Bridge sample images. But Apple has removed this feature and I haven't tested whether Apple has applied the same algorithms for digital zoom.

Therefo... more It's also possible that Google doesn't combine as many frames as some years ago (maybe due to the different processor?). At least in low light conditions, I know that the 6 Pro occasionally doesn't really combine frames anymore, if you don't use Night Sight. I compared HDR+ raw files with single frame dng files (and also with single frame raw files from cameras that captured the same amount of light) and occasionally there was really no advantage regarding the signal to noise ratio. One explanation could be that they prefer to choose one 3/10s exposure instead of three 1/10s exposures, but this doesn't really explain it because they could combine eight or even ten 1/10s exposures in the past.

Therefore, they only need to upscale when you use a higher zoom factor than 10x. They actually even need less upscaling than the S22 Ultra because the S22 Ultra only has 10 megapixels at 230mm, whereas Google can use 12 or 13 megapixels at 230mm. But due to the Quad Bayer array, due to Google's aggressive noise reduction, due to the smaller focal length of the periscope (should be approximately 19mm whereas the S22 Ultra has 27mm) and due to diffraction, it is possible that the 10x images won't look great. But at least regarding diffraction, the S22 Ultra's 10x camera should have basically no advantage.

The Pixel 4 had huge white balance issues, so I bought the Pixel 3a instead. But the white balance of the 3a is much worse than the white balance of the Google Nexus 5x. The Google Nexus 5x in HDR+ On mode (still one of the best phone cameras for wide angle daylight photos) definitely takes better daylight and sunset photos than the 3a and this speaks for itself. The Pixel 6 Pro has a better white balance than the 3a, but it's sometimes still less realistic than the Nexus. When the Pixel 3 was released, Google's results became artificial due to their machine learning zoom and due to more aggressive (possibly again machine learning) noise reduction. When the Pixel 6 was released, Google totally cranked up the luminance noise reduction for daylight photos and the color noise reduction for bright low light photos (if you didn't use Night Sight and used the brightness slider instead), even though the new camera hardware captured far more light than before. It makes zero sense.

Plus, Huawei doesn't have Google's apps and it's useless for secure transactions outside of China. And I wouldn't have it for free, because it's a company with CCP ties. Well had Huawei and honestly can say its better and it always was. Second Huawei without USA spyware is better than Huawei with USA Spyware like google and rest. Lastly those CCP ties were USA lies to make Huawei Fraud. Honestly regardless of a brand the very first time you run a setup you must agree with terms and conditions of the company. And once you do they got you. This is something you cant skip and wont allows you to continue first time setup your phone. Once you do you have no idea which data and where are sent and how they will use them. Words and promises are spoken but bread is always eaten. End of story. By the way did i mention USA spying is worse than spying from so called fraud Huawei which hasnt been ever proven??? USA Inteligence centre build in Utah deserts many years ago says opposite of your claims. They spy everywhere.
Ivo., 08 Oct 2022 No 10x zoom camera - dead on arrival! No "super res zoom" can save it! By that logic most phones are DoA. It's still a decent showing that will probably improve a little over time. Is it competing with the S22 ultra? Up to about 20x, yes. After that? Not close. Neither are particularly great quality above 20x though (S22 ultra is more useable but still terrible if cropped).
It's cool, my S22 Ultra does a similar job. But regardless of manufacturer at the max zoom they always look a bit...well sh!t ;)

oh c'mon, too many people here complaining but not even the oppo find x5 pro which launched at a higher price or the similarly priced xiaomi 12 pro can do that
They look pretty awful and I can clearly see that the camera tried to merge images from the wide angle and the telephoto lenses to make the centre of the frame sharper than the rest, which clearly isn't working on the second sample of the bridge shot. Google lost their touch since Mark Levoy had left.

Huawei P30 Pro still has better zoom than whatever Google pushes out with ai upscale and crop. Not bad for pure digital though.
I pre-ordered the pixel 7 pro but there is no other way to put it. The 30x zoom is shayt. Even the 20x is pathetic.
It's not that impressive...
Huawei with its new tricks which their camera does is a lot better, THey always was and no overpriced Google will change that fact.
google is the "cheapest costliest thing". utility zero, only propaganda
It's impressive. I am not sure it's better than the Pixel 6 Pro though because the bump in zoom level is achieved by the crop of the slightly smaller sensor in the P7P (1/2.55) compared to the P6P's 1/2.5 sensor.
Ry, 09 Oct 2022Not accurate.. you're zooming on already digitally zoomed photos? The first four photos ... more "you're zooming on already digitally zoomed photos?" Of course one needs to compare crops, otherwise the resolution of the eye/display isn't high enough in order to judge the image quality. It's simply nonsense to judge the image quality of a 12 megapixel photo on a for example 2 megapixel display, if you don't crop.
Ry, 09 Oct 2022Not accurate.. you're zooming on already digitally zoomed photos? The first four photos ... more "The first four photos are very nice. What I expect are 1x 5x 10x & 15x" No, the first four photos (One World Trade Center) that gsmarena has posted are approximately 1x, 3x, 5x and 15x. The 3x image is definitely not good, but likely better than Google's previous 3x images. 15x seems to be impressive as the angular resolution is noticeably better than in the 5x image. But the big problems are in the Golden Gate bridge images (you need to open the source as gsmarena hasn't posted all zoom settings): 2x looks partly slightly worse than an upscaled 1x photo, 10x and 15x have nearly the same angular resolution as 5x.
