I Tried Emma D'Arcy's Negroni Sbagliato With Prosecco | POPSUGAR Food

"House of the Dragon" star Emma D'Arcy's spoke for the bisexual collective when they were asked about their drink of choice in a viral TikTok video posted by HBO Max. "A negroni," they answered costar Olivia Cooke Cue with a coy grin. They paused briefly before adding, "Sbagliato," with the Italian trill dripping off the tongue, "with Prosecco in it." I mean — respectfully — pants were creamed.

Over the long weekend, many were quick to try the classic with a twist. Queer Twitter blew up with tweets like, "emma d'arcy speaking 'sbagliato with prosecco' changed the trajectory of my life" and "the lgbtq community on their way to the closest bar so they can order a negroni sbagliato with prosecco in it." As Them. writes, "Thanks to House of the Dragon star Emma D'Arcy, a simple drink order has become a viral queer calling card." Because if Tumblr shaped us Internet Queers to do one thing, it's to carve out memes to represent our entire personality. Ordering a negroni sbagliato with Prosecco is now the equivalent of cuffing our jeans or sitting awkwardly in chairs. Does that mean anything more than harmless fun? Maybe, maybe not. But the point is, we love the opportunity to create community out of an inside joke, something shared.

So what is this mystical negroni sbagliato with Prosecco? A sbagliato is actually just a negroni, but the gin is replaced with Prosecco, so the "with Prosecco" bit is kinda redundant. (Don't tell D'Arcy I said that.) Legend tells it that a bartender reached for the wrong liquor and we ended up with this sparkling cocktail. Sbagliato translates to "mistake" in Italian, which is also what I said when I realized I was bisexual (KIDDING! Well, kinda!). Bisexuals still deal with bi erasure, or as GLAAD defines it, the belief that bisexuality itself doesn't exist (aka coming out as "bisexual" at first felt like a mistake until I found others like me). There is still strong stigma that we're "confused" about our sexuality. But whether you're confused on not, making mistakes to better understand what you like and don't like is part of the fun! Which is why as a proud chaotic bisexual, I had to try a negroni sbagliato for myself. (Also, for the small chance that Emma D'Arcy will pay attention to me.)

I'll take one of each. #houseofthedragon

Making the drink was simple with four main ingredients: Campari, sweet vermouth, sparkling wine, and club soda. Oh, and a lime if you're feeling fancy. After I washed one of my three not-broken wine glasses, I filled it with ice. Technically, you're supposed to pour the Prosecco in first, but I added it in at the end (mostly because I'm bad at reading instructions). I figured everything gets mixed together in the end anyway. I mostly eye-balled it, but if you're a by-the-book person, it's one ounce of sweet vermouth, 1/2 an ounce of Campari, four ounces of sparkling wine of choice, and top it off with a dash of club soda. I even cut out a lime wheel for garnish, even though it was 11 a.m. on a Monday.

Impressed with my mixologist skills, I took a tentative sip and my lips curled back in distaste. I forgot to mix the drink. The only straws I had easy access to were of the penis-shaped variety that I had left over from Pride. This was shaping up to be a lot more of a queer recipe than I had originally intended, but I'm not mad about it. Did I mention I was wearing my "Carol" sweater the whole time? Because Christmas is basically around the corner, despite making a drink better suited for a vacation along the Amalfi Coast.

Once I swirled my penis straw around a few times, I tried again. Delicious. It has an initial sweet taste quickly followed by a sharp bite of bitterness that reminds you that yes, this is alcohol. The balance is welcome after a summer of mimosas. The sparkling wine and club soda add a fizz that makes the drink fun and flirty, which is perfect if you need to work up the courage to talk to someone like Emma D'Arcy. And the blood-red color could work for your Halloween party, proving it's actually a drink to be enjoyed year-round. My takeaway? In the words of one Twitter user, "Pour some prosecco out for the bartenders having to make negroni sbagliatos for 1000 bisexuals this week," because queers, I think we've found our new drink. Cheers!
